Rumors of Cake Poker Buyout Confirmed?

Written by Thomas | Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Several major news outlets, including Bluff Magazine and PokerNewsBoy, are confirming that the sale of Cake Poker to PokerListings.com is pretty much imminent and the transition of the buyout will be completed within the next few weeks.

Poker Forums like 2+2 fueled mass speculation over the past week with posts that PokerListings was pushing Cake in prominent ad spots on their website as of late, including featuring a bonus that was nearly DOUBLE what standards affiliates usually offer (110% up to $1,000 as opposed to an industry-standard 110% up to $600 most other sites offer) and offering some special WSOP tournaments in the mix as well.

Once thought to be one of the rising stars of the online poker industry, Cake Poker has seen its player base shrink considerably since 2009.

Many insiders and affiliates believe that Cake’s insistence on reselling their network “skins” to multiple operators were behind its demise, and it’s been questioned more than once whether Cake would ever survive – especially with the recent resurgence of Merge Gaming and their mega brands of Carbon Poker, PlayersOnly and Sportsbook.com recently bumping up network traffic exponentially in the last year or so.

It is unclear whether more details will emerge regarding the sale of Cake Poker to a single operator as big as PokerListings, but it wouldn’t be surprising that a brand as large as PL would be willing to take on a poker site that still shows big promise – despite the player numbers lately possibly signaling otherwise.

Once the deal becomes more public I’m looking forward to seeing just how much Cake sold for, assuming that info becomes just as public.
