Barney Frank Reintroduces Online Gambling Bill to the House

Written by Sadonna | Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Congressman Barney Frank has been a driving force behind online gambling coming to the United States. Frank has introduce bills that would regulate and legalize online gambling over the past few years and each time his attempt has been shot down. This time around Frank has reintroduced a piece of legislation in the hopes that it will be passed and this time he has republican backup.

Congressman John Campbell, a Republican from California, is backing Frank’s attempt to see the legislation passed. The piece of legislation is called The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act and it was introduced into the House on March 17th.

The bill is identical to H.R. 2267 which was presented to the house in July of 2010. The bill had bipartisan support but was passed out of the House at the time of presentation. The new bill would allow online gambling operators to obtain a gaming license which would allow the operators to accept best from residents in the United States under a federal regulatory system and framework that is enforced by the government.

The bill was created in response to the UIGEA but it would not do away with the legislation. It would instead create a federal regulatory template. Operators would need to apply for a gaming license through the Treasury Department. This would give the operators the opportunity to accept bets from players across the US.

Online gambling activities would be under the authority of the Treasury Department and they would be able to regulate operators as well as terminate licenses or suspend them. They also have the authority to authorize licenses as mentioned above. Those who have licenses will have to stay with the guidelines provided by the Treasury department to be able to keep their license in the US.

Hopefully we will see the bill make it past the House and entered into legislation. If so the US would be greatly affected in the positive as well as online players. Players would have many more options for online gambling and it would be much easier for players to enjoy their favorite gambling games.
