UFC 129 Match-ups and Odds

Welterweight Championship: Georges St. Pierre vs. Jake Shields

St. Pierre is the current holder of the Welterweight Belt and is putting it on the line against Jake Shields.  Shields is a popular pick to upset St. Pierre due to his current 15 fight win streak.  But on the other side of it, it seems that Shields doesn’t really match-up to GSP any better than the last 7 fighters he’s dominated on his current win streak; and on top of that, I see a big difference between the two fighter’s kickboxing.

Pick: Georges St. Pierre -450

Featherweight Championship:  Jose Aldo vs. Mark Hominick

Jose Aldo is possibly the best pound for pound fighter on the planet right now.  He’s completely dominated since signing with Zuffa three years ago; Aldo went 8-0 in his eight World Extreme Cagefighting fights, and none of them were even close.  Hominick is a very good fighter, but he’s not anywhere near the level of Jose Aldo, I like Aldo in a walk here.

Pick: Jose Aldo -500

Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida

Sure, Randy Couture has taken down his last 3 fights, but Machida is on a different level than his last three opponents (Brandon Vera, Mark Coleman, and James Toney).  Couture is a great game-planner and knows how to pull off an upset, but Machida is a different beast than the fighters Couture has recently gone against.  I’m picking Machida in a decision.

Pick: Lyoto Machida -350

Mark Bocek vs. Ben Henderson

These fighters have similar skills and similar records as well.  Ben Henderson was the former WEC Champ and this is his first UFC match.  In my opinion, Henderson has gone against tougher opponents than Bocek has and will outmatch him.  I’m taking Ben Henderson.

Pick: Ben Henderson -145

Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Jason Brilz

This is Brilz first fight since he lost a surprisingly competitive split decision to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira 11 months ago.  Since then though, he’s been struggling from a back injury and hasn’t been able to be back in the ring since then.   Matyushenko on the other hand has fought some very tough guys as well as some huge names. The experience factor definitely favors him here.  I like Matyushenko in a decision.

Pick: Vladimir Matyushenko -120
